Following on from several instances of tower cranes collapsing over the last few years new legislation was introduced on 6th April 2010. The Notification of Conventional Tower Cranes Regulations 2010 requires certain information about conventional tower cranes used on construction sites to be notified to the Health and Safety Executive.

With many companies exploring the different ways they can market themselves as a ‘green’ company, isn’t it time to consider what sustainability can actually do for you?
Without making too much of a generalisation, my personal opinion is that the Companies I am referring to will only be promoting themselves as an eco-friendly organisation for the indirect financial benefits that they will see in their profits. These may be a better corporate image resulting in higher sales, even if the eco-friendly changes made are themselves, running at a loss. My aim is to open people’s minds to the direct financial benefits that can be gained by making use of environmentally friendly ideas and products.

With many people renovating their existing properties rather than opting to move, a staircase which takes up less space for accessing new levels or rooms has never been a more popular feature. A spiral staircase can take up nearly half the room of a conventional straight flight staircase, whilst still providing a convenient means of ascent.

Steve was like a lot of people working a trade in the Construction Industry, due to the economic climate he was out of work more than in it. One day he saw an advertisement for Sitemaster Software, this piqued his interest as it was something allied to building that he knew and as he already carried out his own surveys for estimating purposes he thought that the added bonus of being able to draw up accurate floor plans would give him another opportunity to earn a living doing something he already had an interest in and which could help in his normal job when things picked up. Sort of kills two birds with one stone!

We are often shocked at the number of owners and directors of businesses who are totally unaware that they have legal responsibilities when it comes to training their employees. Without droning on about the various related legislation it is worth saying that an employer should not ask an employee to undertake any task without ensuring that the employee is trained to a level where competence can be evidenced.
