At last, the construction industry seems to be showing signs of growth as business activity picks up for the first time in two years. The CIPS/Markit Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index, which measures construction activity, rose to 53.1 points in March, up from 48.5 in February. Any figure above 50 indicates growth.

New HSE Tower Crane Regulations
April 12th, 2010 by Eurosafe UK
Following on from several instances of tower cranes collapsing over the last few years new legislation was introduced on 6th April 2010. The Notification of Conventional Tower Cranes Regulations 2010 requires certain information about conventional tower cranes used on construction sites to be notified to the Health and Safety Executive.
English teams – are they really all rubbish now? – Part 1 of 4
April 12th, 2010 by The Prawn PunditThe weekend press was full of both plaudits for the victors and brickbats for the losers. No English representation in the last 4 of the Champions League since Adam was a lad and all of a sudden the football journalists are acting like the world has come to an end. Let’s look at the so called big four starting today with Chelsea.
Time to lay off Terry and talk about something more interesting instead
March 10th, 2010 by The Prawn PunditQuite frankly it has all become boring. Sky Sports, Sky News, BBC, ITV, The Red Tops, The Broadsheets, Talk Sport, in fact whatever your choice of media is, there has been no escape from the Terry/Bridge/Unknown Model triangle now for weeks. JT has now been exposed in the papers for a variety of misdemeanours, he has also lost a big mate, upset the missus, lost the England armband and has had to endure, not unjustly, the gleeful abuse of every opposing fan every time he steps onto the pitch.
Time to consider a sustainable investment?
March 1st, 2010 by Sustainable Designs
With many companies exploring the different ways they can market themselves as a ‘green’ company, isn’t it time to consider what sustainability can actually do for you?
Without making too much of a generalisation, my personal opinion is that the Companies I am referring to will only be promoting themselves as an eco-friendly organisation for the indirect financial benefits that they will see in their profits. These may be a better corporate image resulting in higher sales, even if the eco-friendly changes made are themselves, running at a loss. My aim is to open people’s minds to the direct financial benefits that can be gained by making use of environmentally friendly ideas and products.
Guide to Buying a Spiral Staircase
February 26th, 2010 by Complete Stair Systems
With many people renovating their existing properties rather than opting to move, a staircase which takes up less space for accessing new levels or rooms has never been a more popular feature. A spiral staircase can take up nearly half the room of a conventional straight flight staircase, whilst still providing a convenient means of ascent.
A New Opportunity for Construction Tradesmen
February 26th, 2010 by Mobile CAD SurveyingSteve was like a lot of people working a trade in the Construction Industry, due to the economic climate he was out of work more than in it. One day he saw an advertisement for Sitemaster Software, this piqued his interest as it was something allied to building that he knew and as he already carried out his own surveys for estimating purposes he thought that the added bonus of being able to draw up accurate floor plans would give him another opportunity to earn a living doing something he already had an interest in and which could help in his normal job when things picked up. Sort of kills two birds with one stone!
Recent court cases highlight the importance of training
February 25th, 2010 by Eurosafe UK
We are often shocked at the number of owners and directors of businesses who are totally unaware that they have legal responsibilities when it comes to training their employees. Without droning on about the various related legislation it is worth saying that an employer should not ask an employee to undertake any task without ensuring that the employee is trained to a level where competence can be evidenced.
Glimmer of hope for the UK’s beleaguered construction industry
February 12th, 2010 by Careers and Jobs UKWill we win the World Cup?
February 11th, 2010 by The Prawn Pundit
In a word – No!
Apologies for upsetting all the patriots who have been sticking a fiver on England down at William Hills but we have no chance I’m afraid. “Rubbish!” you may scream as you look through your English rose tinted specs whilst dribbling a pint of Stella down your St. Georges t-shirt.
