DSE Assessment
What Act applies?
The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992.
Who do the Regulations apply to?
These Regulations place duties on an employer in respect of work equipment provided for use or used by his/her employees at work.
What is a DSE Assessment?
A purpose of a DSE assessment is to ascertain the suitability of an employee’s workstation and the immediate environment. A typical DSA assessment would assess issues such as:
- Posture
- Furniture including the employees seat
- Monitor/Display Screen
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Software
- Furniture
- Local environment
- Health issues
How often does a DSE Assessment have to be undertaken?
Once a DSE Assessment has been undertaken there is no need to repeat the exercise unless circumstances dictate. The DSE Assessment should be reviewed periodically, and the common practice is to do this on an annual basis. However if alterations are made to an individual’s workstation or if there is a change of workstation or if there is a change to the usual tasks that the employee carries out then a new DSE Assessment should be undertaken.
Who can undertake a DSE Assessment?
Most individuals using a simple checklist can usually undertake a very basic DSE Assessment. However you may wish to employ a person with recognised training in undertaking DSE Assessments to ensure that they are carried out in accordance with the Regulations.
